GEO Content Checker - Free AI Citability Score Tool

Paste any article or page content and get a score out of 100 for AI citability. This free GEO content checker analyses the signals that ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews and other LLMs look for when deciding what to cite - and tells you exactly what to fix. No signup needed.

What is a GEO Content Checker?

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation - the practice of optimising content so that AI-powered search engines and chatbots like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude are more likely to cite it in their responses. As more searches move away from traditional results pages and into AI-generated answers, getting cited by these systems is becoming as important as ranking on Google.

A GEO content checker analyses your writing against the specific signals that LLMs (large language models) look for when selecting content to reference. These are not the same signals that Google uses for traditional SEO. AI systems reward factual density, clear structure, direct answer-shaped writing, lists and tables, authoritative language, and well-sourced claims. Content that scores well on these signals is far more likely to appear in AI-generated answers.

This tool checks all of those signals automatically, scores your content out of 100, and gives you specific actionable recommendations for each area where your content could improve.

How to Use the GEO Content Checker

STEP 01

Paste Your Content

Paste your article, blog post or page content into the text area above. Plain text works fine. Paste the full HTML source if you want image alt text included in the analysis.

STEP 02

Click Analyse

Hit the Analyse button. The tool runs seven checks across your content and calculates your GEO citability score out of 100 in a few seconds.

STEP 03

Review Your Score

See your overall score and the breakdown by category. Each category shows a pass, improve, or weak rating so you can see at a glance where the gaps are.

STEP 04

Act on Recommendations

The recommendations section gives you specific, actionable improvements for each weak area. Update your content, paste it back in, and re-check to see your score improve.

How the GEO Score is Calculated

The score is based on seven categories, each weighted by how strongly it correlates with AI citation behaviour. The total adds up to 100 points.

Factual Density
20 pts
Specific statistics, numbers, percentages, and named source references. The single strongest citability signal.
Lists and Tables
15 pts
Bullet lists, numbered lists, and data tables with proper headers. AI systems extract and present these directly.
Structure and Headings
15 pts
Heading frequency and hierarchy, paragraph length. Structure signals tell AI what each section covers.
Authoritative Language
15 pts
Declarative writing style, low hedging language. AI prefers direct, confident factual statements.
Answer-Shaped Content
15 pts
Paragraphs that lead with the key point, FAQ sections, direct answer phrases. Matches how AI constructs responses.
Definitions and Insight
10 pts
Clear definitions of key terms, original insight, low generic phrase count. Content that defines things gets cited as a reference.
Source Citations
10 pts
Outbound links to credible sources, named attributions. Signals that claims are well-researched and trustworthy.

What the GEO Content Checker Analyses

📊

Factual Density

Counts specific numbers, statistics, percentages, and data points per thousand words. AI systems heavily favour content with concrete, measurable claims over general assertions.

📋

Lists and Tables

Detects bullet lists, numbered lists, and data tables. Checks list length and whether tables have proper header rows. These formats are extracted directly by AI in responses.

📑

Heading Structure

Checks heading count, distribution, and paragraph length. Well-structured content with clear section labels is significantly easier for AI to parse and selectively cite.

💬

Hedging Language Detection

Scans for phrases like "might be", "could be", "perhaps", and "I think" that weaken authority. Flags the count and location of hedging language in your content.

Answer-Shaped Paragraphs

Analyses whether paragraphs lead with the key point. Detects FAQ sections and direct answer phrases. Content that mirrors how AI constructs answers gets cited more.

📖

Definitions and Uniqueness

Identifies clear definitional statements and flags generic filler phrases. Content that defines terms precisely is frequently used as a direct reference by AI systems.

🔗

Source Citations

Counts outbound links and named source attributions. Content that references credible external sources signals trustworthiness to AI.

🖼️

Image Alt Text

When HTML is pasted, checks whether images have descriptive alt text. Images without alt text are invisible to AI systems that process page content.

GEO Content Checker - FAQs

What is GEO and how is it different from SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the practice of optimising content to rank in traditional search results like Google's blue link pages. GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is the practice of optimising content to be cited and referenced by AI-powered systems like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Claude. The two overlap but are not identical. SEO rewards keyword placement, backlinks, and technical signals. GEO rewards factual density, clear structure, direct answer-shaped writing, and well-sourced claims. As AI search grows, content needs to score well on both.

What score should I be aiming for?

A score of 70 or above indicates strong AI citability. Scores between 50 and 70 are reasonable but have specific gaps worth addressing. Anything below 50 suggests the content needs significant work before it is likely to be cited by AI systems. Most well-written, structured articles score between 55 and 75 before any GEO-specific optimisation. With the recommendations this tool provides, most content can reach 75 or above with targeted edits.

Does a high GEO score guarantee AI will cite my content?

No. This tool scores your content against the signals that make AI citation more likely, but it cannot query live AI systems or guarantee any outcome. AI citation also depends on factors outside your content, including domain authority, whether your site has been indexed by the AI's training data or live search, and how competitive the topic is. Think of the score as a measure of how well-prepared your content is, not a prediction of a specific outcome.

Should I paste plain text or HTML?

Either works. Paste plain text for a quick analysis of your writing. Paste the full HTML source code of the page if you want the analysis to include image alt text, properly detect HTML lists and tables, and pick up heading tags. To get the HTML, right-click on the page in your browser and select "View Page Source", then copy everything and paste it in.

Why do lists and tables score so highly?

Bullet lists, numbered lists, and data tables are among the most frequently cited content formats by AI systems. The reason is simple - they are already structured in a way that can be extracted and presented in an AI response without reformatting. A bulleted list of steps or a comparison table can be lifted almost directly into a ChatGPT or Perplexity answer. Prose paragraphs require the AI to paraphrase and restructure, which means less of your original content survives into the citation.

What is hedging language and why does it matter?

Hedging language includes phrases that qualify or soften a claim rather than stating it directly - things like "might be", "could be", "perhaps", "I think", and "it seems". While hedging has its place in academic writing and nuanced argument, it weakens the authority of content in the context of AI citability. AI systems prefer direct, declarative statements because they are easier to present as factual answers. Reducing hedging and stating facts confidently improves both perceived authority and the likelihood of citation.

Is this GEO content checker free?
